For the past few days, I saw unity. Former heavy-hitting candidates came out to support their former competitor. Thompson, Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, Brownback, and even a former Democractic V.P. nominee, Sen. Lieberman. All of them expounded McCain's heroic background and solid character. There was no doubt in their minds that McCain would be a great leader for our nation in a world where evil exists. The bottom line: We know what McCain would do when faced with adversity -- he's shown the world with his experience and deeds as a POW of five years in North Vietnam.
I also saw optimism. The speakers and audience agreed that the glass is always half-full. Words like victory, prosperity, and freedom were used frequently. Speeches were given with humor and smiles. How uplifting! Compare that with the gloom and doom speeches from the Democratic Convention. I think Americans, deep down in their hearts, are optimists. It's engrained within us, but some may not know it because of the distractions seen and heard.
And I saw perseverance. That's how McCain ran his campaign. Earlier in the primaries, nobody thought he'd make it this far. But here he is accepting the nomination, waving and giving thumbs-ups, unable to raise his arms above the shoulders because of injuries sustained as a POW. The Maverick and his running mate won't give up on their principles in this race. They know the supporters expect them to never quit.
